Priority Hoarding: A Retrospectacle by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret.
Interactive, incredibly clever, humorous, sentimental, masterfully crafted, and endlessly welcoming. You couldn’t ask for a better example of how to give old things a second life.
We honestly wish every exhibition could be like this one.
If you challenge yourself not to laugh, you're going to lose. The humor comes at you from every corner of this space, and it's incredibly smart.
The concept takes you inside a fantastical airport, where you go through the rituals of boarding, collecting curious little treasures in your suitcase along the way. As you wander from room to room, you discover mind-bending installations, each bursting with an almost overwhelming sense of sentimentality, wildly imaginative craftsmanship, raw creativity, and an unmistakably human touch.
Every room makes you feel something different. Some feel like a full-blown psychotherapy festival. Others are pure absurdity, where you keep expecting something to happen, but it never does. Some are filled with incredibly beautiful, intricate objects that clearly took an enormous amount of work to create. Others become a game with yourself. And sometimes you simply stand there, completely mesmerized by the beauty of it all.
Along the way, you encounter performers who play with you, and you play right back, until you feel like you've somehow traveled into another dimension.
What we found particularly interesting is that, for us, the strongest impression wasn't necessarily the project's exploration of queer identity. It was the creation of this unbelievably colorful, generous, kind, and completely friendly and kind hearted world. A world we want to dive into again and again.
The culmination of the entire experience is your long-awaited boarding and takeoff. And honestly, it's hard not to cry.
From a technical and artistic perspective, everything is brilliantly executed. We loved how creatively the team repurposed old objects and gave them entirely new lives within this extraordinary world.
And there was something especially touching about seeing the things we'd personally collected throughout our journey transformed into an installation at the very end. A little secret version of ourselves.
By the time we left, we genuinely wanted to hug everyone who created this. We want adults to experience it. We want kids to experience it. We want absolutely everyone to see it, because this is the kind of art that expands your mind, opens your heart, and reminds you just how extraordinary human imagination can be. And one little bonus: there's a bar where one of the main characters will be waiting to serve you a drink.
What a wonderfully strange, beautiful, and unforgettable experience. Watch the video https://www.instagram.com/civica.phl/
